Beaulieu River > Visiting > Environmental Policy

Beaulieu River is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and is committed to minimising the impact of its activities on the environment.

This policy statement sets out how we are working towards achieving our environmental objectives.

  • Meet the environmental legislation that relates to the operation of the marina and associated activities, and where possible identify opportunities to adopt best practice over and above the minimum legislative requirements.
  • Maintain an MCA approved Oil Spill Contingency Plan and ensure the plan is regularly exercised.
  • Ensure that the marina is equipped with a suitable spill kit to deal with any oil or fuel spills and that the staff are trained on how to deal with such situations.
  • Monitor electricity usage with the objective of minimising the use of electricity in all of our activities. For example, turning off lights and equipment in the office when not in use.
  • Provide 24 hour shore side facilities and encourage berth holders to use them whilst alongside.
  • Provide pump out facilities and a wash down area in keeping with environmental standards.
  • Encourage best practice when emptying holding tanks, such as vessels should be more than three miles offshore before emptying their holding tank.
  • Minimise the use of water in all of our activities. For example, using water efficient fixtures throughout the marina.
  • Minimise the creation of waste and maintain a MCA approved Waste Management Plan.
  • Encourage our berth holders to recycle as much waste as they can and provide suitable facilities for them to do so by providing adequate clearly labelled bins.
  • Where possible, we will use email rather than printed materials to communicate and promote our activities.
  • Publicise our environmental commitment and promote sustainability amongst our bertholders and visitors.
  • We will take environmental credentials of our suppliers into account when procuring new products. By doing so we wish to get other organisations to integrate sustainability into their operations to gain contracts.
  • Continue to liaise with the Royal Yachting Association and the British Marine Federation’s environmental initiative; The Green Blue, to ensure we stay up to date with how we can reduce any negative impacts associated with our operations.
  • Encourage berth holders to adopt environmental best practice and supply The Green Blue information upon request.
  • Maintain close liaisons and working links with the New Forest National Park Authority, Natural England and the Environment Agency and maintain memberships of the Solent European Marine Site (SEMS) Management Group. Contribute to the annual reporting process.
  • Ensure that any new development is assessed for environmental impact in accordance with prevailing regulations and licencing requirements.
